The Ultimate Guide to TFT LCD Display

A thin-film-transistor LCD is the fastest-growing display technology used today. It is a semiconductor device that enhances the display’s compactness, efficiency, and cost-efficiency. The TFT LCD is a root category comprising; TFT display panels, Kingtech IPS TFT displays, bar type TFT displays, MCU TFT displays, LVDAs TFT displays, and RGB displays.

The TFT display technology is paired with flat-panel technology, improving manufacturing, mass production, and healthy competition soar in enhanced production. This article is the ultimate guide on TFT LCD display. It will discuss the main TFT displays interface, how TFT works, and the pros and cons.

What is TFT LCD ?

This is the technology used in Liquid Crystal Display. Categorically, they are known as active matrix LCDs. This technology is popularly used in appliances such as video games systems, handheld devices, mobile phones, projectors, car dashboards, computer monitors, television sets, and much more.

Types of TFT LCD Display Technology

There are two main TFT LCD display types of technology; twisted nematic and IPS TFT LCDs.

Twisted Nematic

This is the most common display type technology used because of its variety and low production cost. In addition, the pixel response time of the modern TN panel is fast enough to reduce image retention. The TFT LCD is a real liquid crystal display that describes Thin-Film Transistors.

The response time of specification is also fast, adhering to ISO standards that define the conversion period from black to white. However, the conversion time between gray scales is longer than those specified by ISO.

But, the current Response Time Compensation-Overdrive technology (RTC-OD) enables manufacturers to reduce gray levels conversion. As a result, most TN products are currently using gray levels.

However, the TN display has a limitation. Most of it can’t display 16.7 million colors output from the current graphics card. Another con is the viewing angle limitation, especially in vertical positions.

In-Plane Switching TFT LCDs

This technology came about in 1996 to modify color reproductively and poor viewing angle of Twisted Nematic display panels. It has led to an increase in response time. But the material cost of IPS panels is expensive.

Technical feature of a TFT LCD Display

Point distance

LCD monitor pixel spacing is similar to CRTs; however, they are not important to product performance. LCD has a fixed pixel number. So, if the product has the same size and resolution, the pixel spacing should also be equal. For instance, you get most 15-inch LCDs with a resolution of 1024×768 with a pixel spacing of 0,30mm.

Resolution

The LCD resolution is displayed by pixels, but because of the fixed number and location of the pixels to achieve the best effect, it highly depends on interpolation algorithm calculation should the images become blurred.

Response Time

This is one of the vital indexes for LCDs as it refers to how each pixel responds to signal input, i.e., pixel changing from black to white and vice versa. The speed is normally in milliseconds (ms), a short response time. If it has a long response time in a dynamic image display, it can cause a severe tail phenomenon. Most LCDs have a response speed of 25ms.

Visual angle

Visual angle is a vital consideration factor as the TFT LCD display has to be in a specific angle range. If the color changes from another angle, the picture becomes dim and may shift from a positive to a negative image. Ideally, an LCD visual angle is sandwiched between the vertical and horizontal. However, since the light source has specific directionality after reflection and refraction, the color distortion occurs if viewed beyond this range.

Brightness and Contrast

Brightness is measured as candlelight per square meter (CD/m2). This mark is the maximum brightness mark produced by the backlight illuminant. The Higher the brightness level of up to 300cd/m2, the wider the environment range.

Two improve brightness; manufacturers use this method. The first is improving the LCD panel pass rate, while the other is increasing background light brightness by increasing the tubes. However, a brighter product is not always a better product; the key point is brightness uniformity. This is related to the number of reflectors, light source, and configuration.

Refresh rate

TFT LCD display have a high and low refresh rate making them different from CRT displays. For example, if you have come across the display screen of a camera, you may see a shadow flash across. A high refresh rate means less shadow flicker frequency to the photographer’s eye in this situation. That’s how the refresh rate of TFT LCD display works.

Signal input interface

There are two signal input types that TFT LCD display use; VGA analog and DVI input interface. Most LCDs will provide an analog interface then convert analog display to digital signal from the display card. During this conversion, you may lose information, resulting in jitter, fuzzy, color deviation, and so on. That is where the DVI and VGA interface comes in. A good TFT LCD display can have a DVI interface as they are not expensive and the graphics card are everywhere.

Corrugated LCD

When testing, water ripples appear in the picture like waves ripple, resulting in a phase. However, images can also detect all white even though it’s not that simple to see. But, by taking a closer look, you can discover and adjust the water ripple.

Bad spot

A bad spot, also known as the bad point, is a threat to LCDs. It is a point where the LCD shows the same color. To check for a bad spot in the LCD, ensure the picture’s brightness and contrast is at maximum to display white gratification, then transferred to minimum image, thus displaying black gratification. With that, you can identify a bad point as the color won’t display.

Pros of TFT LCD display

  • It uses less energy when used in bigger devices.
  • It offers sharp images thus no visibility issues.
  • Have attractive designs and appearance.
  • It’s cheaper compared to other display versions.
  • Has no screen burning issues.

Cons of TFT LCD display

  • The major problem is failing in creating larger viewing angles.
  • Fails to show exact color in printing images.
